Why temperature matters so much
Most quality exterior paints need surface and air temperatures within a specific range while they are applied and while they cure, typically from around ten degrees up to the low thirties. Paint applied onto a frosty surface, or late on a day when temperatures are about to plunge, does not cure properly. It can flatten, blush or fail early. The same is true at the other extreme: paint applied to a wall in full summer sun dries too fast, leaving lap marks and poor adhesion.
The sweet spots: autumn and spring
In the capital region, March to May and September to November are ideal. Days are mild, overnight temperatures are workable, and humidity is moderate. Autumn in particular gives long stretches of stable weather that let multi-day exterior jobs run without interruption.
Can you paint in a Canberra winter or summer?
Yes, with judgement. In winter we chase the sun around the house, starting later in the morning after frost has lifted and finishing coats early enough to cure before the evening cold. In summer we do the opposite, working shaded elevations in the heat of the day and sunny faces early. Interiors, of course, are a year-round job, and winter is actually a great time to book interior repaints while exterior schedules are quieter.
Book ahead of the season, not into it
The practical tip most homeowners miss: painters' spring and autumn calendars fill early. How Canberra's climate ages paint faster
The capital's paint-killers are ultraviolet light and movement. Signs your exterior is due now, not next year
Chalky residue on your hand when you rub the wall, hairline cracking or flaking on trims, timber that stays damp after rain, fading that makes the house look tired from the street, and gaps opening at joints and sills are all signs the coating has stopped protecting the building. Once bare timber or render is exposed, damage accelerates and the eventual repaint costs more because repairs come first. Caught early, a repaint is purely cosmetic. Caught late, it is restoration.
